A dry surface is not always a dry root ball. Confirm the moisture deeper in the pot, then rehydrate evenly instead of giving repeated small sips.

Check deeper before adding water

Probe gently and compare pot weight. Wilt can also happen in wet, damaged roots; this example starts with a dry root zone.

What you may notice

  • The pot feels unusually light and the root ball is dry.
  • Leaves curl, wilt or develop thin crispy edges.
  • The mix shrinks from the pot or repels water.
  • New growth is smaller and dries before opening.

Likely causes

  • The root ball has dried more deeply than a surface check suggests.
  • Compact or water-repellent mix prevents even wetting.
  • Higher light, heat or airflow has increased water use.
  • A small root-bound pot dries faster than expected.

What to do now

  1. Water slowly in stages until the whole root ball is evenly moist and excess drains.
  2. If water runs through dry channels, pause and repeat gently rather than flooding once.
  3. Empty the saucer and return to the plant's normal drying range.
  4. Review light, pot size and root crowding before simply watering more often.

When to isolate or discard

Simple dryness does not require isolation. Isolate only if you also find pests, spreading lesions or root decay. Discard only when repeated severe drying has killed all viable stems and nodes.
