A terrarium is a small garden that lives inside glass. Closed jars trap their own humidity and suit moss, fittonia, pilea and other plants that stay small. Open bowls and water gardens suit succulents, cacti and lucky bamboo. Both need a bright spot out of direct sun, and far less watering than a normal pot.

What you need to build one: a glass container, a drainage layer of lava rock or hydro grains, a growing medium, living or preserved moss, a few small plants, and long tools to place them.
