Read the signs before changing care

Sunburn & heat stress

Light helps plants grow, but a sudden jump in intensity or heat can damage tissue before the plant has time to adapt.

Houseplant care during a transition between indoor and outdoor conditions

What you may notice

  • Pale, bleached or tan patches on exposed leaves.
  • Crispy edges on the side facing strong light.
  • Leaves feel hot, curl or collapse after a sudden exposure.
  • Damage stops spreading once exposure is corrected.

Likely causes

  • Moving a shade-grown plant directly into intense sun.
  • Leaves touching or sitting close to hot glass.
  • High heat combined with a dry root zone or strong reflected light.
  • Transport or balcony exposure without gradual acclimation.

A calm rescue plan

What to do now

  1. Move the plant to bright filtered light, not into deep darkness.
  2. Check root moisture and water only if the root zone is ready.
  3. Leave partly green leaves in place while the plant stabilises; trim fully dead tissue later.
  4. Reintroduce stronger light gradually over days or weeks according to the plant.

When to isolate or discard

Sunburn and heat stress are not contagious. Isolate only when similar marks continue to spread away from exposed areas or pests are present. Discard only if the crown and all viable stems have been killed.

Use climate and moisture tools to stabilise conditions. A grow light can provide controllable indoor light after the plant is moved away from harsh exposure.

Use every product only as its label directs. Patch-test treatments and never combine care products casually.
