The Right Pot

Compare the root ball with the space around it. A much larger pot is not always a helpful upgrade.

How it works Pot size, drainage and medium work together. Excess wet medium can stay oxygen-poor longer than the root ball, particularly in low light.

More pot is not always more growth

Check the root ball before choosing. A small root system in a much larger pot leaves more wet mix unused, especially when the plant is growing slowly.

The animation compares fit. A larger pot is appropriate for crowded healthy roots; a plant that has lost roots may need the same size or smaller.

Watch the planting depth as the root ball is lowered, supported and gently filled around.

How it works Repotting changes the space, air and water around roots. Its purpose is a functioning root zone, not a larger container by default.

HAVE A REASON

Repot to solve a root-zone problem

Dense circling roots or broken-down mix can make watering difficult. Check the roots and medium first; repotting is not an automatic cure for every yellow leaf.

This is routine repotting of a healthy leafy houseplant. Succulents, orchids and plants recovering from rot can need different handling and watering.

Let observations guide aftercare

A new mix may dry differently. Give the plant stable conditions and observe its recovery.

How it works Water use can change after repotting because the amount and texture of the mix changed. The old watering calendar may no longer suit the pot.

ROOTS ARE ADJUSTING

Keep the surroundings steady

Repotting can disturb fine roots that supply the leaves. Keep the plant in suitable, familiar light; sudden harsh sun or a hot draught increases water loss while roots adjust.

The film compares damp and drier examples; it does not show a real drying interval. Species, root condition and the new mix determine when to water.
