Variegation Science
By Nabat Admin
What Is Variegation?
Variegation occurs due to mutation in chloroplast distribution.
Types:
-
Sectoral (Half Moon)
-
Marbled
-
Mint-type
-
Aurea (yellow chlorophyll mutation)
-
Stable tissue culture variegation
White areas lack chlorophyll.
They cannot photosynthesize.
That’s why variegated plants:
-
Grow slower
-
Need more light
-
Are more expensive
Why Some Variegation Reverts
Reversion happens when:
-
Light is too low
-
Green tissue outcompetes white tissue
-
Genetic instability
To maintain variegation:
Prune fully green stems early.
Stability Hierarchy
Most stable:
Thai Constellation (tissue cultured)
Less stable:
Albo
Highly unstable:
Half Moon patterns
Collectors must understand this before purchasing.
