How to Prevent Root Rot in Humid Climates

What Causes Root Rot?

Root rot is primarily caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • No airflow in soil

  • Pots without drainage holes

In Kuwait, indoor AC environments reduce humidity, but improper watering can still cause rot.

How to Prevent Root Rot

1. Use Chunky Soil

Roots need oxygen. Avoid compact mixes.

2. Choose Pots with Drainage Holes

Never use decorative pots without drainage unless using a nursery pot inside.

3. Do Not Water on a Schedule

Always check soil moisture first.

4. Ensure Air Circulation

Avoid tightly packed soil and stagnant corners.

5. Avoid Letting Plants Sit in Water

Remove excess water from trays immediately.

Signs of Early Root Rot

  • Wilting despite wet soil

  • Yellowing leaves

  • Black or mushy roots

  • Foul smell

If detected early, repot immediately in fresh, dry, well-draining mix.
