Variegation Science

What Is Variegation?

Variegation occurs due to mutation in chloroplast distribution.

Types:

  1. Sectoral (Half Moon)

  2. Marbled

  3. Mint-type

  4. Aurea (yellow chlorophyll mutation)

  5. Stable tissue culture variegation

White areas lack chlorophyll.

They cannot photosynthesize.

That’s why variegated plants:

  • Grow slower

  • Need more light

  • Are more expensive

Why Some Variegation Reverts

Reversion happens when:

  • Light is too low

  • Green tissue outcompetes white tissue

  • Genetic instability

To maintain variegation:

Prune fully green stems early.

Stability Hierarchy

Most stable:

Thai Constellation (tissue cultured)

Less stable:

Albo

Highly unstable:

Half Moon patterns

Collectors must understand this before purchasing.
